Asha Bandele
Acclaimed Author, Poet, & Former Features Editor
Essence magazine
An award-winning author and journalist,
asha bandele, first attained recognition when she penned her 1999
debut book, The Prisoner’s Wife, a powerful, lyrical memoir
about a young Black woman’s romance and marriage with a man
who was serving a possible life prison sentence. Ms. bandele’s
latest memoir, Something Like Beautiful, chronicles the continuation
of her love with Rashid and its ultimate loss, with another emotional
disappointment and a serious bout of depression. She is also the
author of two collections of poems and the novel, Daughter. Ms.
bandele is a graduate of City University of New York; New School
for Social Research, B.A.; Bennington College, M.F.A. She also possesses
a bachelor of arts degree from the New School for Social Research
and master of fine arts from Bennington College. Bandele serves
as an editor-at-large for Essence, and has written for The Source,
Honey, and Rap Pages.
