University-Community Partnerships
for Social Justice

This forum, led by two accomplished Latino scholars working at the University of Miami and Georgia State University, will focus on their efforts to use the talents and resources of their institutions to promote the human rights and well  being of underserved ethnic minorities  in their communities. They will discuss the social justice foundations of their work and present examples of partnerships with immigrant Latino communities affected by issues of domestic violence, structural poverty, and immigration.

These presentations will be followed by a Panel Discussion with other noted members of the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Latino social service community.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Etiony Aldarondo is Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Dunspaugh-Dalton Community and Educational Well-Being Research Center in the School of Education at the University of Miami. The recipient of various recognitions for academic excellence and community involvement, his scholarship focuses on positive development of ethnic minority and immigrant youth, domestic violence, and social justice-oriented clinical practices. His publications include the books Advancing Social Justice through Clinical Practice and Programs for men who batter: Intervention and prevention strategies in a diverse society (with Fernando Mederos, Ed.D.) Dr. Aldarondo has a long history of involvement with grass root advocacy organizations, foundations, and federal government agencies such as CDC, HHS, NIJ, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Domestic Violence Prevention Fund. He currently serves on the boards of directors for the National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence, The Council on Contemporary Families, Project Hope, and Profunda.

Julia L. Perilla, Ph.D., is a clinical community psychologist and Associate Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at  Georgia State University. Dr. Perilla is currently Director of Research for Casa De Esperanza. She is President of TAPESTRI: The Refugee  and Immigrant Coalition to End Gender-Based Oppression and an appointee to the Georgia Commission on Family Violence. Since  1996, Dr. Perilla has collaborated with the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico in research and training projects regarding trauma and  domestic violence issues. Dr. Perilla received the Georgia Commission on Family Violence 2001 Gender Justice Award for her work with  immigrant populations affected by domestic violence.
